The Closing of a Chapter - Sunset Beach, NC

We sold our home on Sunset Beach, NC  in March. It was a bittersweet decision but it had become challenging to get to SSB enough to enjoy it. Also, now living in the Caribbean sealed the deal. So, before all the restrictions of COVID-19 really came into effect, we closed on March 6th.  We were to leave our major things there to retrieve after the last rental in early August. Best laid plans on paper don't always work out! So, on April 10th movers with the help of our agent and the new owners, moved all of our things out of the house to storage. The trip we had planned as a family to see the house one last time and pack up is no longer.  I am sad but oddly content. I am so thankful for the 10 years of wonderful and precious memories we created there with grandparents, cousins, Aunts and Uncles and friends.

I am especially thankful for the memories I have of my Dad at Sunset. Here is one of my favorite.

We had walked to the ice cream shop after coming off the beach late one afternoon. My Dad had a love of all things ice cream and as well had a long history of bringing his beach canopy with him for all our beach adventures. The tent/canopy is another story involving buying the insurance to replace if damaged and Dad collecting on it again and again! But on with this story.  We all got our ice cream and stayed inside the small shop as a storm was brewing. Suddenly, Dad remembered that the tent was still on the beach and he wanted to go get it. Much to Bill's dismay, Dad and I took off for the beach to take down the canopy. By this time it was pouring down rain and there was a bit of thunder and lightening.....Dad was undeterred, he was going to get that tent down. We got to the beach and what was still standing was the metal frame. So Dad and I took it down amidst the thunder and lightening and dragged it back to the house. Mom and Bill and boys were back at the house by now. Needless to say going to get the tent in a storm wasn't our most sound decision but the memory of the laughter and time together, sopping wet out on the porch will last a lifetime. I think we even have a few photos to document the event. It was quite a storm!

We owned the Crab Trap for a decade. A lot happens in 10 years. Here are just some of the pictures over the years. I hope the new owners love it as much as we did.
